2022 Season Begins and a 2021 Recap

A Good Morning in Haines Alaska

We left our beautiful mountains-to-sea town of Haines, Alaska this morning and headed out for our 20 22  summer fishing season. It was a glorious sunny  morning and the all-day trip to Juneau was smooth and  lovely.  Both Doug and I were looking forward to  getting back out on the water and pulling up those big  King and Coho salmon – especially after the 2021  season we had.

 2021 Recap
2021 was a good year for most trollers – there were fish to be caught and a nice price point per pound. Unfortunately, Doug hurt his ribs right before the start of the season so we didn’t fish as hard as we usually do. We started late and had to take a couple weeks off mid-summer for healing. It was a different kind of season for us but still delivered spectacular sights and long days of wilderness fishing.
We often spend much of the season fishing in the Gulf of Alaska – from Cross Sound south along Baranof Island. Due to our adjustments for the season we chose to stay in “inside waters”, meaning inside of the islands that border the Gulf. We fished Chatham Strait and further south into Sea Otter Sound and other waters closer to Craig, AK.

I quite enjoyed these relatively “new” fishing grounds. One advantage to fishing this area is weather related. When the weather churns up the Gulf, bringing big waves and wind, we sometimes have to sit out a day or 2 of fishing at anchor when we are on the “outside”. Fishing “inside” gave us more options of places to get out of some of the weather and keep fishing. I also really enjoy anchoring up, and experiencing, new places. There is beautiful terrain thru-out Southeast Alaska and Chatham Strait is no exception. We were gifted with many glorious mountain peaks, waterfalls and wildlife viewings.

Hardware in my elbow

After the season wrapped up, we headed back to our homestead to continue our plans to transform it into a nice space for our off-season. Unfortunately, it was my turn to hurt myself as I slipped on the ice after our first winter storm and shattered my elbow. Crippled and in a lot of pain, it made for a long, dark, sad winter.

We were both more than happy to say goodbye to 2021. Onward to 2022 and a happier, healthier year!
